By Goodeal and Boyle (1976), every nonsingular injective module \(E\) has a unique decomposition \(E=E_1\oplus E_2\oplus E_3\) where the \(E_i\) are of certain types I, II, and III, respectively. In this paper the authors develop a general theory on the existence and uniqueness of type decompositions of modules, so that the Goodearl-Boyle decomposition and many other known results are obtained as special cases.
