The Stoltz angle with vertex \(\xi\) and opening \(\sigma\in [1,\infty)\) on the unit circle \(\mathbb{T}\) is defined as the subset \(\Omega_\sigma(\xi)=\{ z\in \mathbb{D}: | 1-\overline{\xi}\, z| \leq \sigma (1-| z| ) \}\) of the open unit disk \(\mathbb{D}\). A consequence of known facts about holomorphic functions in \(\mathbb{D}\) is that if \(f\) is a nontrivial analytic function in \(\mathbb{D}\) satisfying \[ | f(z)| \leq C\exp\bigl((1-| z| )^{-\alpha}\bigr) \leqno{\text{(G)}} \] for some fixed \(C>0\) and \(0\leq \alpha<1\) then any sequence of zeros \(\{z_k\}\) contained in \(\Omega_\sigma(\xi)\) must satisfy the Blaschke condition \[ \sum_k (1-| z_k| )<\infty.\leqno{\text{(B)}} \] Here, the authors identify more general approach regions considered much earlier by \textit{G. T. Cargo} [Can. J. Math. 14, 334-348 (1962; Zbl 0103.29802)] in which the growth condition (G) implies the summability condition (B). Specifically, they consider the regions \[ R(A,\gamma,\xi) = \{ z\in\mathbb{D}: | 1-\overline{\xi}\, z| ^\gamma\leq A(1-| z| )\} \] which are Stoltz angles when \(\gamma=1\) but allow tangential approach when \(\gamma>1\). The first of the main results assumes that \(f\) belongs to the Bergman space \(A^p\) (\(0<p<\infty\)) of analytic functions whose \(p\)-th powers are integrable with respect to area measure on \(\mathbb{D}\). In this case, if a sequence of zeros of a nontrivial \(f\in A^p\) lies in \( R(A,\gamma,\xi)\) for some specific \(A>1\) and \(\gamma\geq 1\), then (B) holds. The second main result states that if \(f\) is a nontrivial analytic function satisfying (G) and if a sequence of its zeros lies in \( R(A,\gamma,\xi)\) for some \(A>1\) such that \(2\alpha\gamma<1\), then (B) holds. The results require certain information about mapping properties of the Nevanlinna class.
