A lower Hessenberg matrix is a real or complex \(n\times n\) matrix \(H=(h_{ij})\), where \(h_{ij}=0\) for \(j>i+1\). The maximal rank of superdiagonal submatrices is used to define generalized Hessenberg matrices \(GH1\) [\textit{M. Fiedler, Z. Vavrin}, ibid. 380, 95--105 (2004; Zbl 1044.15007)]. The author connects this definition with another kind of generalized Hessenberg matrix \(GH2\) which he introduced in his paper [``Some observations on inverses of band matrices and low rank perturbations of triangular matrices'', Acta Tech. Acad. Sci. Hung. 108, 41--48 (1999)]. He confirms that every \(GH2\) matrix is a \(GH1\) matrix and proves many other properties of these two kinds of matrices.
