Improving earlier results by van Douwen, Hart and van Mill, the author shows that the existence of a countably compact Abelian group \(G\) without non-trivial convergent sequences implies the existence of a countably compact group the square of which is not countably compact. The existence of such a group \(G\) is implied by existence of a selective ultrafilter \(p\) on \(\omega\) (in fact, there is an almost \(p\)-compact group \(G\) such that \(G\times G\) is not countably compact).
