This is a comprehensive review of results in Riemannian geometry related mainly to two classical formulae: those of Hsiung-Minkowski and of Obata-Rellich. The results covered by the authors contain the Aleksandrov-Reilly-Ros theorem, some bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian and results on scalar curvature functions related to those by Kazdan-Warner for Gaussian curvatures in [Ann. Math. (2) 99, 14--47 (1974; Zbl 0273.53034)].
