A toroidal Lie algebra \(\tau\) is a generalization of affine Lie algebras which has an infinite center. In this paper, it is shown that the study of irreducible representations for \(\tau\) with finite dimensional weight spaces is reduced to the study of irreducible representations of \(\tau_0\oplus \mathbb C d_n\), with finite-dimensional weight spaces on which the center acts as scalars. Here \(\tau_0\) is a universal central extension of \(\mathcal G \otimes \mathbb C[t_1^{\pm 1}, \ldots,t_n^{\pm 1}]\), \(\mathcal G\) is a simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra over \(\mathbb C\) and \(d_n\) is a derivation.
