The paper presents a technique for tuning the parameters of PI controllers, which regulate industrial plants. The plants are assumed to be modeled by first order lags with time delays. The tuning is based on charts depicting the loci of constant stability margins and cross-over frequencies; these charts can be automatically drawn, by adequate computer programs (such as MATLAB). The approach considers several types of performance indices and allows developing a robustness analysis with respect to the plant uncertainties. The proposed technique is illustrated by some numerical examples.
