An absolute valued algebra over \(\mathbb K\) (\(=\mathbb R\) or \(\mathbb C\)) is an algebra over \(\mathbb K\) provided with a norm \(| .|\) such that \(| xy|=| x|| y|\), for any \(x,y\). In contrast, a two graded absolute valued algebra is a superalgebra \(A=A_0\oplus A_1\), such that both \(A_0\) and \(A_1\) are normed spaces (norms denoted by \(| .|\)), and such that the multiplicative property of the norm is satisfied for homogeneous elements. The paper under review initiates the investigation of these objects. In the finite dimensional case, the odd part of any such algebra is isometric to the even part, which is a usual absolute valued algebra, and hence of dimension \(1\) in the complex case, or dimension \(1\), \(2\), \(4\) or \(8\) in the real case. Any two-graded absolute valued algebra is shown to be, as an ungraded algebra, either simple or isomorphic to the direct sum of two copies of a simple algebra. The odd part is always an absolute valued triple system, and the converse is proven in the finite dimensional case. The two graded absolute valued algebras of dimension at most four are classified, and the paper ends with a list of open questions for future research.
