The authors investigate the techniques of splitting as a method of constructing artificial boundary conditions (ABCs) for the linear advection diffusion reaction equation when the domain of interest is an arbitrary region with a piece-wise smooth artificial boundary. It is shown that the use of splitting allows constructing exact, local, and geometrically ABC's which is a great advantage of the developed method compared to those known so far. It is proved that the resulting advective and diffusion problems are well posed in the sense of existence, uniqueness and stability. Results of numerical experiments confirm the functionality of the approach.
