The authors study problems of calculus of variations of the form: Minimize \(I(u)\) over the set \(u_{0}+ W_0^{1,p}(\Omega; {\mathbb R}^{ N})\), where \(I(u) = \int_\Omega F(x,D u(x))dx\), \(\Omega\) is an open bounded subset of \({\mathbb R}^n\), \(f~:~\Omega\times {\mathbb R}^{n \times N}\mapsto \mathbb R\) is a Carathéodory function, and \(u_{0}\in W^{1,p}(\Omega; {\mathbb R}^{N})\). The authors are interested in minimizing sequences \(\{Du_k\}\) generating a Young measure. When \(F\) satisfies the growth condition \(c_1| \xi| ^p -c_2 \leq F(x,\xi) \leq c_3(1+| \xi| ^p)\), \(c_i>0\) for \(i\in\{1,2,3\}\), and some particular behavior at infinity, the authors prove local higher integrability properties of Young measures. When the Young measure corresponds to a classical minimizer this result yields local higher integrability of the gradient of the minimizer.
