The author gives a classification of a certain kind of Kobayashi hyperbolic manifolds under conditions on holomorphic automorphism groups. Let \(M\) be a connected Kobayashi hyperbolic manifold of dimension \(n\) with \(n\geq 2\). Denote by \(d(M)\) the dimension of the holomorphic automorphism group \(A(M)\) of \(M\). Then it is well-known that \(A(M)\) is a Lie group and \(d(M)\leq n^2+2n\). The author studies the case where \(n\geq 3\) and \(d(M)= n^2- 1\) and gives a classification of such manifolds. The main result in this paper is as follows: If \(n\geq 3\) and \(d(M)= n^2- 1\), then \(M\) is biholomorphically equivalent to the following manifolds. (1) \(B^{n-1}\times S\), where \(B^{n-1}\) is the \((n-1)\)-dimensional unit ball and \(S\) is a hyperbolic Riemann surface with \(d(S)= 0\). (2) The tube domain of dimension 4. He also considers the case \(n= 2\) and gives examples that show some of the specifics of the case \(n= 2\).
