Let \((X,\| \cdot\| )\) be a nonsymmetric normed space and \(H\) a subspace of \(X\), \(\dim H<\infty .\) Let \(B\) be the unit ball of \(X\) and \( \theta \in X\) with \(\| \theta\| <1.\) Then the Minkowski functional associated to \((B-\theta )\cap H\) is a nonsymmetric norm \(| \cdot | _{H,\theta }\) on \(H\). The author considers the following two problems: (a) Find some conditions in order that a Chebyshev set \(M\) included in \(H\) be convex. (b) Find some conditions for the convexity of a bounded Chebyshev set contained in a hyperplane \(H\) of \(X.\) Concerning problem (a), one obtains the following main results: (1) If each point of the sphere \(S_{H,\theta }\) in the nonsymmetric normed space \( (H,| \cdot | _{H,\theta })\) is smooth, then any Chebyshev set \(M\subset H\) is convex; (2) if \(\dim H=3\) or \(4,\) and any accessible point of the ball \(B_{H,\theta }\) in \((H,| \cdot | _{H,\theta })\) is smooth, then any Chebyshev set \(M\subset H\) is convex. For (b) one proves: suppose that \(\dim X<\infty ,\) \(H=\ker h\), \(h\in X^\ast\) and \(M\subset H\) is a bounded Chebyshev set. If there exists \(\theta\in\text{int}B\) for which \[ \text{cl}\{\varphi\in S_{H,\theta}^\ast|\exists f\in\exp S^\ast,\exists\lambda=\lambda(f)>0,f|_H=\lambda\varphi\}=S_{H,\varphi }^\ast, \] then \(M\) is convex. Other approximation properties of sets contained in a subspace of a nonsymmetric normed space are also considered.
