This text provides an overview of the basics of scientific computing. This is done within the context of a simple mathematical model describing exponential decay. Maintaining the simplicity of the model allows for a deeper investigation of the details behind combining mathematics and computer science. In this manner the author provides an excellent introduction to the field of scientific computing via a consideration of physically relevant models. The theoretical aspects required are covered succinctly; an overview of the various finite difference schemes is provided in a very systematic fashion. Many well-known models are introduced, indicating the relevance of the models considered from a diverse range of fields. Engagement with the computational aspects is elegantly intertwined with possible computer programs which can be used as a means of solution. This text is an excellent tool for teaching and ideal for readers who would like to enter the field, or reinforce prior knowledge.
