A pre-wavelet is a square-integrable function \(\psi\) such that the sequence \(\{\psi_{j,k}, k, j \in R\}\) (where \(\psi_{j,k}(t):=\psi(2^{j/2} +k)\)) is a semiorthogonal Riesz basis. This definition was coined by \textit{G. Battle} [in: Wavelets: a tutorial in theory and applications. Boston, MA etc.: Academic Press. 73--90 (1992; Zbl 0797.65117)]. The main results of this paper are the following: Theorem 3.2, which shows that the frame operator of the Riesz wavelet basis with a certain decay condition has \(L_p\)-boundedness; the proof of this theorem is based on the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition theorem. Theorem 3.3 gives a characterization of a pair of biorthogonal Riesz wavelet bases for Lebesgue spaces; the proof relies on the \(L_p\)-boundedness of the frame operator of the dual wavelet basis, which is an application of Theorem 3.3. Finally, Theorem 4.4 shows that under the decay condition, the dual wavelet basis of a pre-wavelet basis has wavelet structure. The frame operators of both bases are bijective and unconditional.
