Fix \(X\) a Tychonov space and denote by \(F(X)\) the free topological group over \(X\). It was proved in [\textit{A. V. Arkhangel'skij} et al., Topology Appl. 33, No. 1, 63--76 (1989; Zbl 0689.54009)] that, if \(X\) is metrizable, then: {\parindent=0.7cm\begin{itemize}\item[(a)] \(F(X)\) is of countable tightness if and only if \(X\) is either separable or discrete; \item[(b)] \(F(X)\) is a \(k\)-space if and only if \(X\) is either locally compact separable or discrete. \end{itemize}} With the aim to extend these theorems to generalized metrizable spaces, the authors show that: {\parindent=0.7cm\begin{itemize}\item[(a)] if \(X\) is a paracompact \(\sigma\)-space and \(k\)-space, then \(F(X)\) is of countable tightness if and only if \(X\) is either separable or discrete; \item[(b)] if \(X\) is a first-countable paracompact \(\sigma\)-space, then \(F(X)\) is a \(k\)-space if and only if \(X\) is either locally compact separable metrizable or discrete. \end{itemize}} Counterparts of these results are given in particular for \(k^\ast\)-metrizable spaces.
