The article studies Riemannian metrics on Lie groupoids and introduces the notion of a Riemannian metric on a differentiable stack. It is part of a series of papers on Riemannian geometry of Lie groupoids and differentiable stacks. The notion of Riemannian metric on Lie groupoids, also called a \(2\)-metric by the authors, was developed in [J. Reine Angew. Math. 735, 143--173 (2018; Zbl 1385.53076)]. Further investigations into the Riemannian geometry of differentiable stacks can be found in [the first author and \textit{M. de Melo}, ``Geodesics on Riemannian stacks'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1906.03459}]. In the framework of Riemannian groupoids, the authors show that any split fibration between proper groupoids can be made a Riemannian submersion. This leads to linearisation results for proper groupoid fibrations. As an application, the techniques developed yield new proofs for the rigidity result for Lie groupoid deformations obtained in [\textit{M. Crainic} et al., ``Deformations of Lie groupoids'', Preprint, \url{1510.02530}]. In addition, the metrics turn out to be Morita invariant and can thus be used to construct stacky tubular neighborhoods and a stacky Ehresmann theorem.
