Let \(B[H]\) denote the Banach algebra of all (bounded linear) operators of a complex Hilbert \(H\) into itself, and let \(G[H]\) stand for the group of all operators from \(B[H]\) with a bounded inverse (i.e., with an inverse in \(B[H]\)). An operator \({T\in B[H]}\) is a contraction if \({\|T\|\leq1}\), power bounded if \({\sup_n\|T^n\|<\infty}\), and normal if it commutes with its adjoint \(T^*\). For any \({T\in B[H]}\), let \(\rho(T)=\{{\lambda\in{\mathbb C}}\!:{(\lambda I-T)\in G[H]}\}\), \(\,\sigma(T)={\mathbb C}\backslash\rho(T)\), and \(W(T)=\{{\lambda\in{\mathbb C}}\!:{\lambda=\langle Tx\,;x\rangle}\; \text{for some}\;{\|x\|=1}\}\) stand for the resolvent set, spectrum, and numerical range of \(T\), respectively, where \(W(T)\) is a nonempty and convex set whose closure includes \(\sigma(T)\); if \(T\) is normal, then the closure of \(W(T)\) is the convex hull of \(\sigma(T)\). Let \({\mathbb D}\) stand for the closed unit disk (centered at the origin of \({\mathbb C}\)). The resolvent function of \(T\) is the map \({R_T\!:\rho(T)\to G[H]}\) defined by \(R_T(\lambda)=({\lambda I-T})^{-1}\). After considering a detailed account on the uniform asymptotic behavior of the \(B[H]\)-valued sequence \(\{{T^n(I-T)}\}\), the paper under review considers further results along this line. Specifically, it shows that (i) if \(T\) is a contraction for which \({W(T)\subseteq K\subseteq{\mathbb D}}\), where \(K\) is a particular closed and convex set such that \({K\cap\partial{\mathbb D}}=\{1\}\) (the so-called quasi-Stolz set), then \(\|{T^n(I-T)}\|={\mathcal O}(1/n^\beta)\), i.e., \(\limsup_n\!n^\beta\|{T^{n+1}-T^n}\|<\infty\), for some \({\beta\in[1/2,1)}\) (Theorem 2.4). It is also shown that the converse holds if the contraction \(T\) is normal (Corollary 2.7). Moreover, the paper also shows that (ii) if \(T\) is power bounded with \({\sigma(T)\cap\partial{\mathbb D}}=\{1\}\), then \(\|{T^n(I-T)}\|={\mathcal O}(1/n^\beta)\) for \({\beta\in(0,1]}\) if and only if \[ \sup_{|\lambda|\in(1,2)}|{1-\lambda|^{1/\beta}}\|R_T(\lambda)\|<\infty \] (Theorem 3.6). More conditions for the identity \(\|{T^n(I-T)}\|={\mathcal O}(1/n^{1/2})\) (i.e., with \({\beta=1/2}\)) are also discussed, and the particular case of \({H=L^2}\) is considered as well. The paper closes with some open questions.
