Planar bi-Sobolev mappings are homeomorphisms \(f:\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^2\to\Omega'\subset\mathbb{R}^2\), where both \(f, f^{-1}\in W^{1,1}\). For such mappings, the authors prove several results about the higher integrability of \(|Df^{-1}|\), assuming integrability conditions on the \(q\)-distortion \(K_{q,f}:=J_f^{-1}|Df|^q\), where \(J_f\) is the Jacobian determinant and \(q\in(1,2]\) is a fixed parameter. These results extend known theorems for \(q=2\), in which case \(K_{2,f}\) is the classical distortion function. The prototypical Theorem 1.1 says that \(K_{q,f}\in L^{1/(q-1)}\) if and only if \(|Df^{-1}|\in L^{q/(q-1)}\). In other results, an assumption that \(K_{q,f}\) is in a space ``close to'' \(L^{1/(q-1)}\) (e.g., in the \(L\log L\)-type scale, or in the sense of grand Lebesgue spaces) implies that \(|Df^{-1}|\) is in a space similarly close to \(L^{q/(q-1)}\).
