Consider the Neumann problem \[ -\Delta u=| u|^{p-1}u+\lambda u\text{ in } \Omega;\quad \partial u/\partial n=0\text{ on } \partial \Omega, \] where \(\lambda\in {\mathbb{R}}\) and \(p=(N+2)/(N-2)\) is the critical Sobolev exponent, i.e. \(p+1\) is the Sobolev conjugate exponent of 2 in \({\mathbb{R}}^ N\), \(N\geq 3\). The authors show that for any \(\lambda\) there exist infinitely many nontrivial solutions to this problem if \(\Omega\) is a ball in \({\mathbb{R}}^ N\), \(N\geq 3\). Moreover, they establish the existence of a nontrivial solution to the problem for some values of \(\lambda\) provided that \(\Omega\) is a bounded \(C^ 2\)-domain in \({\mathbb{R}}^ 3\), symmetric to a plane. An abstract can be found in [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I. 310, 775-778 (1990; Zbl 0713.35033)].
