    Let \(G\) be a group, \(\sigma:G\to G\) an involution and \(\mathbb{C}\) the field of complex numbers. The function \(f:G\times G\to \mathbb{C}\) supposed to be central in each variable (i.e. \(f(x_1 x_2,y_1)=f(x_2 x_1, y_1)\) and \(f(x_1,y_1 y_2)=f(x_1, y_2 y_1)\) for all \(x_1,x_2,y_1,y_2\in G\)), satisfies the functional equation \[ f(x_1\sigma y_1,x_2\sigma y_2)-f(x_1\sigma y_1,x_2)-f(x_1,x_2\sigma y_2)=f(x_1 y_1,x_2 y_2)-f(x_1 y_1,x_2)-f(x_1,x_2 y_2) \] for all \(x_1,x_2,y_1,y_2\in G\) if and only if \[ f(x_1,x_2)=A(x_1,x_2)+a(x_1)+b(x_2), \] where the function \(A:G\times G\to \mathbb{C}\) is a bihomomorphism which is \(\sigma\)-odd in each variable and \(a,b:G\to \mathbb{C}\) are arbitrary functions satisfying \(a(x_1 x_2)=a(x_2 x_1)\) and \(b(x_1 x_2)=b(x_1 x_2)\) for all \(x_1,x_2\in G\). This is the main result of the paper (and its erratum). It generalizes the result of \textit{J. K. Chung} et al. [J. Korean Math. Soc. 38, No. 1, 37--47 (2001; Zbl 0972.39017)] who obtained the same solution in the special case when \(\sigma(x)=x^{-1}\) and \(x^2=y\) has a solution on \(G\) for all \(x,y\in G\).
