Let \(\psi \) an \({\mathcal L}^2 (\mathbb{R}^d)\) function, \(a\) an invertible \(d\times d\) matrix, and \(\Gamma \) a lattice in \( \mathbb{R}^d\), i.e., \(\Gamma = c \mathbb{Z}^d\) with an invertible \(d\times d\) matrix \(c\). An affine wavelet system \((\psi, a , \Gamma) \) is the collection of functions \[ (\psi , a, \Gamma) = \{| \det a| ^{j/2} \psi (a^jx-\gamma ) : j \in \mathbb{Z} , \gamma \in \Gamma\}. \] In this paper the problem of density of such wavelet systems \((\psi , a, \Gamma)\) is studied. It is proved that the set of generators forming Riesz bases is dense in \({\mathcal L}^2 (\mathbb{R}^d)\). If \( f \in {\mathcal L}^2 (\mathbb{R}^d)\), and \( \epsilon > 0,\) there exists a function \(\psi \in {\mathcal L}^2 (\mathbb{R}^d) \), an expansive matrix \( a \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times d}\), and a lattice \(\Gamma \), such that \(\| f- \psi \|_2 < \epsilon \) and \((\psi , a, \Gamma)\) is a Riesz basis for \({\mathcal L}^2 (\mathbb{R}^d)\). In the more general case, where the affine system forms a frame, it is shown that the generators associated to a fixed but arbitrary dilation form a dense set. Finally, the case of orthogonal affine frames is studied, and a density result for the unit sphere of \({\mathcal L}^2 (\mathbb{R}^d)\) is derived.
