The Cauchy problem for nonlinear strictly hyperbolic systems of PDEs in one space variable ist studied by means of nondegenerate systems. These are described as systems for which the Riemann problem is solvable with finitely many waves. It is shown that any system can be approached by a nondegenerate system. New interaction estimates are given and convergence of a front tracking systems is shown. As an application, time-regularity of the graph solutions of LeFloch is demonstrated.
