\textit{D. Lind} and \textit{K. Schmidt} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 12, No.~4, 953--980 (1999; Zbl 0940.22004)] showed that for some ergodic \(\mathbb Z^d\)-actions by automorphisms of a compact group \(X\) the group \(H\) of homoclinic points (points whose orbits approach the identity along any path going to infinity in \(\mathbb Z^d\)) is isomorphic to the character group of \(X\). More generally, \textit{M. Einsiedler} and \textit{K. Schmidt} [Dynamics and randomness. Lectures given at the conference, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile, December 11--15, 2000. Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers. Nonlinear Phenom. Complex Syst. 7, 95--124 (2002; Zbl 1030.37016)] showed that the homoclinic group is a quotient of a locally compact ring \(R\) by \(H\). Here the structure of this ring \(R\) is examined more closely in the case \(d=1\) of a single automorphism; in particular it is described in terms of the stable and unstable groups of the action under an adapted topology. This provides a topological version of a special case of the Pisot--Vijayaraghavan theorem, and a connection to coding and Rauzy fractals is given.
