This note deals with the following recently introduced moduli of smoothness on the unite sphere \(S^{d-1}\subset {\mathbb R}^d\) defined as follows: \[ \omega^r(f,t)_p=\sup\left(| | \triangle^r_{\rho}f| | _{L_p(S^{d-1})}:\rho\in \text{SO}(d),\rho x\cdot x\geq {\text{cost}\,}t, \forall x\in S^{d-1}\right), \] where \(\text{SO}(d)\) is the group of orthogonal \(d\times d\) matrices whose determinant is equal to \(1,\) \(\triangle_{\rho}f(x)=f(\rho x)-f(x)\) and \(\triangle^k_{\rho}f(x)=\triangle_{\rho}\left(\triangle^k_{\rho}f(x)\right).\) The purpose of the author is to prove, for \(1<p<\infty,\) the equivalence between \(\omega^{2r}(f,t)_p\) and the traditional measure of smoothness on \(S^{d-1}\) given by \[ \omega^{2r}(f,t)_p=\sup_{0<\theta\leq t}| | (S_{\theta}-I)^rf| | _{L_p(S^{d-1})} \] (here \(S_{\theta}f(x)={1\over m(\theta)}\int_{x\cdot y=\cos \theta}f(y)\,dy\)). Besides, he shows that the equivalence does not hold if \(p=1\) or \(p=\infty.\)
