The paper under review is close to a former paper of the author concerning the same subject [J. Algebra 131, No.2, 598-625 (1990; Zbl 0699.20009)]. The main purpose of this new paper is to convince the reader that weights might be also useful in studying representations for proper flagtransitive subgroups of Lie groups and for sporadic groups related to finite quotients of infinite affine buildings. Examples for weak BN-pairs of rank two are sketched.
