The principal result of this paper is a necessary condition for local exactness in dimension q for the cohomology of the differential complex associated with a hypo-analytic structure on a smooth manifold. The condition is formulated in terms of a certain intersection number. The result has an interesting interpretation in terms of Levi geometry in the case of a CR structure.
