The authors define \(W\)-approximative (weak) compactness for a nonempty set \(C\) of a smooth Banach space \(X\) in terms of a function \(W\) instead of the norm as follows: For any sequence \(\{y_n\}\) in \(C\) and any \(x \in X\) satisfying \(W(x_n,y_n) \rightarrow\inf \{W(x,y) : y \in C\}\), the sequence \(\{y_n\}\) has a subsequence which converges (weakly) to an element in \(C\). \(X\) is called approximatively (weakly) compact if any nonempty closed convex set of \(X\) is \(W\)-approximatively (weakly) compact. This notion is studied. Sufficient conditions for continuity properties of a generalized projection operator are explored.
