Several results on the existence of smooth and nonsmooth sections of the unit balls of the classical real spaces \(C(Q)\) and \(L^{1}[0,1]\) by translations of a fixed finite-dimensional subspace are proved. In particular, an affirmative answer to the following question is given. Does there exist a proper subspace \(L\) of \(C(Q)\) such that the intersection of any translation of \(L\), \(L+x\), with \(x\) in the interior of the unit ball of \(C(Q)\), with the closed unit ball is always a nonsmooth set? A similar question is also considered for the space \(L^{1}[0,1]\). As an application of the obtained results, it is shown that in \(L^{1}[0, 1]\) any finite-dimensional sun is convex. This extends the classical theorem of P. Ørno, Yu. A. Brudnyi, E. A. Gorin to the effect that in \(L^{1}[0,1]\) any Chebyshev set is either a singleton or is infinite-dimensional.
