This paper generalizes the approach of Iyer, Lee, Wald, and Zoupas (see [\textit{R. M. Wald} and \textit{A. Zoupas}, Phys. Rev. D (3) 61, No. 8, Article ID 084027, 16 p. (2000; Zbl 1136.83317)] and references therein) to understand the Hamiltonian dynamics of Lagrangian field theories without breaking covariance, to the case in the presence of boundaries. Examples are studied. It is also shown that the Poisson bracket on covariant phase space coincides with the Peirels brackets. The developments may remove obstacles to the application of the framework for the computation of the entropy of dynamical black holes.
