Let \(X=G/K\) be a Riemannian symmetric space of noncompact type of dimension \(n\). Here \(G\) is a connected noncompact semisimple Lie group with finite center and \(K\) is a maximal compact subgroup of \(G\). The authors consider the Marcel Riesz means operator \(S^z_R\), \(z \in \mathbb C\), \(R>0\), see definitions below. The main result is the following. Let \(1\leqslant p \leqslant 2\). If \[ \mathrm{Re} \, z > \left(n-\frac{1}{2}\right)\left(\frac{2}{p}-2\right), \] then for every function \(f\in L^p(X)\) the Riesz means \(\left(S^z_Rf\right)(x)\) converge to \(f(x)\) for almost all \(x\) when \(R\to+\infty\). This statement is obtained from the following estimate. Introduce the maximal operator \(S^z_*\): \[ S^z_*(f)(x)=\sup_{R>\|\rho\|^2} |S^z_R(f) (x)|, \ f\in L^p(X), \ 1\leqslant p \leqslant 2, \] \(\rho\) being the half sum of positive roots. Then under the above conditions adding \(q>2\) we have that for every \[ s\geqslant \frac{pq}{2-p-q+pq} \] there is a constant \(c(z)>0\), such that for every \(f\in L^p(X)\) holds \[ \| S^z_*(f) \|_{(p,s)} \leqslant c(z) \|f\|_p \] The norm \(\| \ . \, \|_{(p,s)}\) is defined for functions \(f\) on \(X\) which admit a decompo\-sition \(f=\varphi +\psi\), \(\varphi\in L^p(X)\), \(\psi\in L^s(X)\), namely, \(\| f \|_{(p,s)}=\inf \{ \|\varphi\|_p+\|\psi\|_s\}\), the \(\inf\) is taken over all such decompositions. Let us define \(S^z_R\). Let \(\mathfrak g\) and \(\mathfrak k\) be the Lie algebras of \(G\) and \(K\), respectively. We have the Cartan decomposition \(\mathfrak g = \mathfrak p \oplus \mathfrak k\). Let \(\mathfrak a\) be a maximal Abelian subspace of \(\mathfrak p\) and \({\mathfrak a}^*\) its dual. The Killing form on \(\mathfrak g\) gives a positive definite form and a norm \(\| \ . \, \|\) on \({\mathfrak a}^*\). Let \(\varphi_\lambda\) be the elementary spherical function of index \(\lambda\in {\mathfrak a}^*\) on \(G\). The spherical Fourier transform \(\mathcal F\) and its inverse \({\mathcal F}^{-1}\) are given by \[ (\mathcal F f)(\lambda)= \int_G \, f(x) \, \varphi_\lambda(x)\, dx, \ \ \ ({\mathcal F}^{-1} h)(x) = c \, \int_{{\mathfrak a}^*} \, h(\lambda) \, \varphi_{-\lambda}(x) \, \frac{d\lambda}{|\mathbf{c}(\lambda)|^2}, \] where \(\mathbf{c}(\lambda)\) is the Harish-Chandra function and \(c\) a constant. The Riesz means operator \(S^z_R\) is the convolution with the function \(\varkappa^z_R\) which is the inverse Fourier transform of the following function \(s^z_R\): \[ s^z_R(\lambda)= \left(1- \frac{\|\rho\|^2+\|\lambda\|^2}{R}\right)_+^\lambda, \ \ \lambda\in{\mathfrak a}^* \]
