Multipliers on locally symmetric spaces (Q472021)

In this work the authors study the properties of multipliers on a class of locally symmetric spaces. An analogue of the Hörmander-Mikhlin multiplier theorem is proved and some results obtained in the authors' previous work [Math. Ann. 343, No. 3, 639--667 (2009; Zbl 1189.42006)] are improved. The basic facts about Fourier analysis on symmetric spaces of non compact type are reviewed: spherical functions, Fourier transform, \(L^2\)-spectrum of the Laplacian. Then the existence of the specific spherical function is shown and an adequate approach to estimate the norm of the operator appearing in the previously mentioned multiplier theorem is proved. A comparison with other results (multiplier theorem for convolution operators, multipliers with singularities etc.) is also given.
