The authors study domino tilings on the Aztec diamond. Possible limit Gibbs measures for the dominoes/dimers are called solid, liquid or gas (phases). The limit shape govering the separation between these phases is a family of 8th-degree algebraic curves. The authors give a double contour integral formula for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix of the two-periodic Aztec diamond. The subleading asymptotics of the inverse Kasteleyn matrix for the liquid-solid and liquid-gas boundaries are found. In the case of the liquid-gas boundary it is shown that the dominant part is given by the inverse Kasteleyn matrix for an infinite gas region plus a correction term involving the extended Airy kernel. Analogical results are obtained in the case of the liquid-solid boundary, but in this case, the dominant, ``background part'', is instead given by a coupling function for an infinite solid region.
