This work addresses the preferable strategy of population dispersal in a two-dimensional heterogeneous environment; the random movements of individuals are assumed to be different in two orthogonal directions. Singel and two-species competition situations are considered. The most non-trivial result of the exploration of such a system consists in the conclusion that the only evolutionary stable dispersal strategy for two competing populations is the one-directional movement. This conclusion is supported and illustrated by the results of numerical simulations.
