This work addresses the problem of proper formulation of reaction-diffusion systems, which describe species invasion process, in particular, a biologically relevant formation of travelling fronts. To solve this problem, a three-component reaction-diffusion system, which can be directly associated with either the Lotka-Volterra diffusion-competition model or with the ``Controlling Invasive Alien Species'' model. Respectively, the singular limit of such a system leads to the moving free boundary, where two species coexist, for a two-dimensional population spread and replacement problem. In addition to the mathematical analysis of the system, some particular ecological problems with realistic parameters are considered. In particular, the situation of the replacement of red squirrels by grey squirrels in the UK.
