The Briancon-Skoda theorem establishes that for a nonzero ideal \( I=(g_{1},\ldots ,g_{r})\subset \mathcal{O}_{n}=\mathbb{C\{}z_{1},\ldots ,z_{n}\}\) the following inclusion holds \[ \overline{I^{k+q-1}}\subset I^{k}\text{ for every }k\in \mathbb{N}, \] where \(q:=\min (n,r)\) and \(\overline{J}\) means the integral closure of an ideal \(J\subset \mathcal{O}_{n}\). Note \(\mathcal{O}_{n}\) is the local ring of the complex space \(\mathbb{C}^{n}\) at \(0\), i.e., \(\mathcal{O}_{n}=\mathcal{O }_{\mathbb{C}^{n},0}\). The author extends the B-S theorem (in exactly the same form) on local rings of other complex spaces at singular points. In the main theorem the B-S theorem holds for \(\mathcal{O}_{X,x}\) where \((X,\mathcal{O}_{X})\) is a \(n\)-dimensional normal complex space and \( x\in X\) is a\ weakly rational singularity. As corollaries the author obtains the B-S theorem for rational singularities and the following characterization of rational surface singularities: \(x\) is a rational singularity of a normal surface \(X\) if and only if the B-S theorem holds for \(\mathcal{O}_{X,x}.\)
