Let \(S\) be a finitely generated subring of the complex numbers, and \(\mathfrak{g}\) be a Lie algebra of an algebraic group over \(S\). Let \(\mathbf{k}\) be a field of positive characteristic \(p\), and let \(S \to \mathbf{k}\) be a base change. The centre of the enveloping algebra \(U(\mathfrak{g}_{\mathbf{k}})\) contains two special subalgebras (one of them being the Harish-Chandra part of the centre). \textit{V. Kac} and \textit{A. Radul} [in: The Gelfand Mathematical Seminars, 1996--1999. Dedicated to the memory of Chih-Han Sah. Boston, MA: Birkhäuser, 77--84 (2000; Zbl 0966.17014)] whether these two subalgebras span the centre, for \(p\) big enough. The answer turns out to be negative in general. \textit{F. D. Veldkamp} has shown in [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 5, 217--240 (1972; Zbl 0242.17009)] that the answer is positive if \(\mathfrak{g}\) is semisimple. \par The main result of the paper under review is an extension of Veldkamp's result to the class of Lie algebras that arise as the reduction modulo (a large enough prime) \(p\) from an algebraic Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{g}\), such that \(\operatorname{Sym}(\mathfrak{g})\) is a polynomial algebra, and \(\mathfrak{g}\) has no nontrivial semi-invariants in \(\operatorname{Sym}(\mathfrak{g})\). On the basis of this result, the author is able to solve the derived isomorphism problem for the enveloping algebras of this class of Lie algebras.
