In this paper, the authors study the nonlinear deformations of elastic bodies, viewed as Riemannian manifolds immersed into the Euclidean space, where the isometric immersion has low regularity (\(W^{2,p}\)). The first step in this approach is to obtain a geometric rigidity estimate for mappings between \(d\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold and canonical spheres of dimension \(d\geq 2\). Then, the authors obtain the asymptotic rigidity of elastic membranes by proving the weak convergence of some extrinsic geometries. Finally, the authors give a simplified geometric proof for the continuous dependence of the deformation on the Riemannian metric/Cauchy-Green tensor and the second fundamental form.
