In this article the authors introduce a generalization of topology of uniform convergence on \(C(X)\) which they call \(U_{I}\)-topology, where \(I\) is a \(z\)-ideal of \(C(X)\). \(C(X)\) endowed with this topology is denoted by \(C_{U_{I}}(X)\). All possible connected ideals of \(C_{U_{I}}(X)\) are characterized and several necessary and sufficient conditions for \(C_{U_{I}}(X)\) to be a topological ring are given. It is shown that a maximal ideal \(M\) of \(C_{U_{I}}(X)\) containing \(I\) is closed if and only if \(M\) is a real maximal ideal. The authors also examine a few aspects related to two kinds of classification of the \(z\)-ideals in \(C(X)\) defined by the \(U_{I}\)-topology and the \(m_{I}\)-topology, respectively, while the \(m_{I}\)-topology was introduced by \textit{F. Azarpanah} et al. [Topology Appl. 159, No. 16, 3486--3493 (2012; Zbl 1255.54009)]. They also produce two special characterizations of \(P\)-spaces via these two kinds of classification of the \(z\)-ideals.
