Let \(m\) be a nontrivial multiplicative function on a hypergroup \(K\). The authors study continuous functions \(f\) on \(K\) satisfying the functional equation \(f(x*y)=f(x)m(y)+f(y)m(x)\) for \(x,y\in K\). These functions generalize the additive ones for the constant function \(m=1\) and are called \(m\)-sine functions by the authors. The authors present examples of such functions via partial derivatives at \(m\) for commutative hypergroups where the space of all nontrivial multiplicative functions can be parametrized by suitable subsets of \(\mathbb R^d\). In particular, for one-dimensional discrete polynomial hypergroups and non-compact Sturm-Liouville hypergroups, this approach via derivatives leads to a complete classification of these functions.
