This paper investigates the Timoshenko system \[ \left\{ \begin{array}l \varphi_{tt}-(\varphi_{x}+\psi)_{x}=0,\\ \psi_{tt}-\psi_{xx}+\varphi_{x}+\psi+\int_{0}^{t}g(t-s)\psi_{xx}(s)ds+|\psi_t|^{m(x)-2}\psi_t=0. \end{array} \right. \] Energy decay rates for this system are obtained under the assumption that the variable-exponent function \(m\in C[0, 1]\) satisfies \(1 < \inf_{x\in [0, 1]} m(x)\) and the log-Hölder continuity condition, and the relaxation function \(g:[0,+\infty) \to (0,+\infty)\) is a \(C^1\) and nonincreasing positive function satisfying \[ \int_0^{+\infty}g(t)dt)<1,\quad g'(t) \le -\xi (t)H_1(g(t)) \ (t \ge 0), \] where \(\xi: [0,+\infty) \to (0,+\infty)\) is a nonincreasing differentiable function and \(H_1: (0,+\infty) \to (0,+\infty)\) is a \(C^1\) function which is linear or strictly increasing and strictly convex \(C^2\) function on \((0, r_1]\), with \(H_1(0) = H'_1(0) = 0.\)
