The authors study a class of abstract functional differential equations with continuous-time dynamics interspersed with impulses. At the time of an impulse \(t=s^-\), the system state \(x(t)\) changes according to the equation \[ x(s) = g(s, x(s^-)). \] Between impulses, the state \(x\) is either governed by the abstract differential equation \[ \dot{x}(t) = A x(t) + B u(t) + f(t, x(t)) \] or the effect of the impulse may linger (``non-instantaneous impulses''): \[ x(t) = g(t, x(s^-)). \] Under a large set of technical assumptions, the authors establish the existence of a (mild) solution of such systems for some class of control function \(u(t,x)\) using Sadovskii's fixed point theorem. Then, they leverage this result to prove the approximate controllability of the system.
