In this paper the entropy of frequency measures associated with primitive random substitutions is investigated. The authors show how the entropy of these measures matches a novel concept of entropy expressed in terms of inflation words. They prove the following: Theorem. Let \(\vartheta_\mathbf{P}\) be a primitive random substitution with Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue \(\lambda\) and right eigenvector \(\mathbf{R}\). Let \(\mu_\mathbf{P}\) be its frequency measure on \((X_{\vartheta},S)\). Then, for all \(k\in\mathbb{N}\) there holds \[ \frac{1}{\lambda^{k}} H^{\mathrm{T}}_k \mathbf{R}- H(\lambda^{-k})\leq h(\mu_\mathbf{P}) \leq \frac{1}{\lambda^{k}-1}H^{\mathrm{T}}_k \mathbf{R}. \] In particular, \(h(\mu_\mathbf{P}) = \lim\limits_{k\to \infty} H^{\mathrm{T}}_k \mathbf{R}\). The authors show that there is a measure of maximal entropy that is achieved as a weak limit of frequency measures for subshifts of primitive and compatible random substitutions. New methods for computing and analyzing the entropy of various frequency measures are developed by the authors. Indeed, they establish closed form formulae for the entropy of frequency measures for a variety of random substitution subshifts. Let \(X\) be the subshift of a primitive and compatible random substitution. The authors prove that there exists a sequence of frequency measures \((\mu_n)_n\) such that \(\mu_n\) converges weakly to a measure of maximal entropy \(\mu\) for the system \((X, S)\). The authors prove that the system \((X_{\vartheta}, S)\) is intrinsically ergodic under the provided hypotheses. Moreover, the unique measure of maximal entropy is the frequency measure associated with uniform probabilities. The last section includes a number of examples that highlight the key findings as well as a number of unresolved questions.
