In the paper the relationship between negation and contradiction is explored. Since classical negation and contradiction are interdefinable and too general for the purpose of reasoning about contradictory information, the authors introduce the notions of graded negation and toleration. This makes it possible to express such statements as: ``If \(\gamma\) holds, then \(\alpha\) negates \(\beta\)''. Among possible applications of the proposed formalism are resolving conflicts and handling inconsistent information in negotiation, learning, or merging multiple opinions.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0957.00012].
