The author associates a certain weighted convolution algebra \(L^1_{cw}(G)\) to each totally disconnected, locally compact group \(G\), and studies its properties. Recall that a measurable function \(w: G\to\, ]0,\infty[\) on a locally compact group \(G\) is called a submultiplicative weight if \(w(xy)\leq w(x)w(y)\) for all \(x,y\in G\). For each submultiplicative weight \(w\), a weighted convolution algebra (or Beuerling algebra) \(L^1(G,w)\) can be defined. Submultiplicative weights \(w_1\) and \(w_2\) are called equivalent if there are constants \(a,b>0\) such that \(aw_1\leq w_2\leq bw_1\), which holds if and only if \(L^1(G,w_1)=L^1(G,w_2)\). Given a totally disconnected, locally compact group \(G\), an element \(x\in G\) and a compact, open subgroup \(U\) of \(G\), the author writes NEWLINE\[NEWLINE w_U(x):=[xUx^{-1}: xUx^{-1}\cap U] NEWLINE\]NEWLINE for the displacement index of \(U\) with respect to the inner automorphism \(y\mapsto xyx^{-1}\) of~\(G\). He shows that \(w_U\) is a continuous submultiplicative weight on~\(G\) (henceforth called a ``conjugation weight''), and that all conjugation weights are equivalent. Thus \(L^1_{cw}(G):=L^1(G,w_U)\) is independent of the choice of~\(U\). Since \(w_U\geq 1\), \(L^1_{cw}(G)\) is a subalgebra of \(L^1(G)\). The author shows that \(L^1(G)=L^1_{cw}(G)\) if and only if \(G\) has a compact, open, normal subgroup. For \(x\in G\), let \(s(x):=\min[xUx^{-1}: xUx^{-1}\cap U]\) be its scale (as introduced in the author's seminal works [Math. Ann. 300, 341--363 (1994; Zbl 0811.22004); J. Algebra 237, 142--164 (2001; Zbl 0982.22001)]). \textit{R. G. Möller} [Can. J. Math. 54, No. 4, 795--827 (2002; Zbl 1007.22010)] showed that the scale of \(x\in G\) is given by NEWLINE\[NEWLINE s(x)=\lim_{k\to\infty} [x^kVx^{-k}: x^kVx^{-k}\cap V]^{1/k}, NEWLINE\]NEWLINE for each compact open subgroup \(V\) of \(G\). The author obtains a transparent new explanation for this formula: it can be interpreted as the spectral radius formula for the translation operator \(f\mapsto \delta_x*f\) on \(L^1_{cw}(G)\).NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1334.42001].
