Let \(\operatorname{Homeo}_0(S^1)\) be the connected component of the identity of the group of homeomorphisms of the circle \(S^1\) and \(A=[0,1]\times S^1\) be the closed annulus. The author considers the following action \(\varphi_{K,\lambda}\) of the group \(\operatorname{Homeo}_0(S^1)\) on \(\operatorname{Homeo}(A)\). Take a non-empty compact subset \(K\subset [0,1]\) which contains the points 0 and 1 and a map \(\lambda: [0,1]-K \to \{-1,+1\}\) which is constant on each connected component of \([0,1]-K\). To a homeomorphism \(f\in \operatorname{Homeo}_0(S^1)\) we associate a homeomorphism \(\varphi_{K,\lambda}\in \operatorname{Homeo}(A)\) which is defined as follows. If \(r\in K\), we associate to a point \((r,\theta)\in A\) the point \((r,f(\theta))\), \(\theta\in S^1\). If \(r\) belongs to a connected component \((r_1,r_2)\) of the complement of the compact subset \(K\) and if \(\lambda((r_1,r_2))=\{-1\}\), we associate to a point \((r,\theta)\in A\) the point \(((r_2-r_1)(\widetilde{f}(\theta)-\widetilde{f}(\theta-\frac{r-r_1}{r_2-r_1}))+r_1,f(\theta))\), where \(\widetilde{f}\) is the natural lift of the \(f\) on \(\mathbb{R}\). If \(\lambda((r_1,r_2))=\{+1\}\), we associate to a point \((r,\theta)\in A\) the point \(((r_2-r_1)(\widetilde{f}(\theta+\frac{r-r_1}{r_2-r_1})-\widetilde{f}(\theta))+r_1,f(\theta))\). To construct an action on the torus, it suffices to identify the point \((0,\theta)\) of the closed annulus with the point \((1,\theta)\).NEWLINENEWLINEThe main theorem of this article is the following: Any non-trivial action of the group \(\operatorname{Homeo}_0(S^1)\) on the closed annulus is conjugate to one of the actions \(\varphi_{K,\lambda}\). Any non-trivial action of the group \(\operatorname{Homeo}_0(S^1)\) on the torus is conjugate to one of the actions \(\varphi_{K,\lambda}^{T^2}\).
