A \(C^0\) interior penalty method for a fourth-order variational inequality of the second kind (English)

A priori and a posteriori error estimates are derived for a fourth-order variational inequality of the second kind. The variational inequality results from a nondifferentiable functional by modelling the frictional plate contact problem. The problem is discretized bythe \(C^0\) interior penalty method. Using residual based a posteriori error estimators, a numerical test problem is solved on adaptive grids, which confirms the theoretical results. A priori error estimates do not require additional regularity of the solutions.
