Let \(\mathcal{S}^n\) denote the class of star sets in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), that is, the class of bounded Borel sets that are star-shaped at the origin of \(\mathbb{R}^n\).NEWLINENEWLINEThe main result of the paper under review gives a characterization of the dual mixed volumes \(\tilde V(L_1,\dots,L_n)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\), \(n\geq 2\), \(L_1,\dots,L_n\in\mathcal{S}^n\). The result is as follows:NEWLINENEWLINE``Let \(F:(\mathcal{S}^n)^n\to [0,\infty)\), \(n\geq 2\), be an additive functional on the class of \(n\)-tuples of star sets in \(\mathbb{R}^n\). If \(F\) is rotation invariant and vanishes whenever the intersection of two of its arguments is \(\{0\}\), then there is a \(c\geq 0\) such that NEWLINE\[NEWLINEF(L_1,\dots,L_n)=c\tilde V(L_1,\dots, L_n),NEWLINE\]NEWLINE for all \(L_1,\dots,L_n\in\mathcal{S}^n\).NEWLINENEWLINEHere, `additive' means additive in each argument with respect to radial addition, and `rotation invariant' means that \(F\) is unchanged if the same rotation of \(\mathbb{R}^n\) is applied to each of its arguments.''NEWLINENEWLINEIn the paper, it is proved that if one of the properties of the above characterization result is omitted, then other examples of operators (satisfying the remaining properties) can be found.NEWLINENEWLINEThe above result has its analogue in the context of the Brunn-Minkowski theory (instead of the dual Brunn-Minkowski theory). This was proved by \textit{V. D. Milman} and \textit{R. Schneider} [Adv. Geom. 11, No. 4, 669--689 (2011; Zbl 1242.52011)].NEWLINENEWLINEIn order to prove the above characterization result, the authors first obtain general characterization results for positive additive functionals on products of the space of the real-valued continuous or the bounded Borel functions on the sphere.
