Tempered distributions are commonly used in various fields of mathematical physics, where the set of Schwartz functions appears as a dense subspace of the relevant Hilbert space.NEWLINENEWLINEIn this paper, Schwartz operators are introduced as a non-commutative analog of Schwartz functions for the quantum setting. The space of Schwartz operators is shown to be a dense subspace of the set of trace class operators and its topological dual space is identified with a certain class of quadratic forms. This implies that Schwartz operators can approximate a general quantum state with arbitrary precision and the associated dual space can be considered as a non-commutative analog of ordinary tempered distributions, allowing harmonic analysis for the quantum setting.NEWLINENEWLINEAs its applications, the operator moment problem is discussed as a non-commutative analog of the Hamburger moment problem in measure theory and convergence properties of fluctuation operators are also studied.
