Let \((X,\mathcal W)\) be a balayage space such that \(1\in\mathcal W\). Suppose that there is a Green function \(G>0\), a metric \(\rho \), and a decreasing function \(g:[0,\infty )\rightarrow (0,\infty]\) which has the doubling property and satisfies \(G\approx g\circ \rho \). Further, suppose that the constant function \(1\) is harmonic and that balls in \((X,\rho )\) are relatively compact. The author shows that every positive harmonic function on \(X\) is constant, and establishes a Wiener test (at infinity) for a given set \(A\) to be unavoidable. He then considers the particular case where \(A\) consists of a locally finite union of pairwise disjoint balls \(B(z,r_z)\) \((z\in Z)\) which satisfy a certain separation property, and shows that \(A\) is unavoidable if and only if, for some (or any) \(x_0\in X\) the series \(\sum_{z\in Z}g(\rho (x_0,z))/g(r_z)\) diverges. This generalizes the work of several authors.
