The paper is an expanded version of a talk given by the author at the ``XIX Convegno UMI''. The author discusses some of his research on singular integral operators on metric spaces without the doubling assumption and the analysis of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on connected Riemannian manifolds that are noncompact, complete and have infinite volume.
